My Favorite Things: The Toran
I love a good Boho vibe – whether over the top layers of color and texture or that one, special, well-edited piece of ethnic art that makes a room come alive.
An interior should be like a person – well-traveled – and full of memories.
One of my favorite travel souvenirs is a Toran. (Trust me, I never knew what they were called, despite having loved them for years.) A toran is a colorful door hanging that welcomes guest at the entrance of homes in Hindu cultures.
But these lovely textiles can be hung anywhere – click through and you’ll see the creative ways bloggers, designers and other creatives are using torans in their homes…and in some cases…boats!
Yep, that’s a houseboat! As discovered by Julie Simpson of the Wealden Times. What a fabulous floating home! The torans used throughout the space are complimented by layer upon layer of embroidery, patchwork and more in this totally-committed boho home. (Ummm.. is that patchouli I smell?)
Use a Toran as Window Treatment
Here’s a completely different approach. Paige Morse is an interior decorator, photo stylist and creative entrepreneur based in Dallas, who happens to be a finalist in HGTV’s Fresh Faces of Design Competition. Her use of a toran in her own kitchen is a great way to add color and texture to a more simple space. Frankly, I’m in love with every detail in her well-edited and gorgeously-photographed cottage.
Use a Toran at in the Entry Way
Jewelry designer Gabriela Kiss also uses a toran to great affect in her boho abode. Here, the decorative door hanging is used on the interior, rather than the exterior for the entrance. Gabriela’s entire home is beautiful and evocative. You can see more of the
Use a Toran as a Headboard
South Florida blogger and mama Andrea Duclos’s home (above) is sunny, bright and filled with color ful and quirky flea-market finds. She uses a toran above her bed to add a pop of color in an otherwise neutral room. Every nook and corner is captured beautifully by photographer Hannah Mayo on Glitter Guide.
Amp up Color with a Toran
And then there’s this hot pink explosion of gorgeousness in a Bollywood-inspired apartment. This Parisienne home was featured in the French home decor magazine Marie Claire Maison. What a completely over the top and decadent way to use a toran (or three). All that luscious color is just right! I love it!
Hang a Toran in the Kitchen
Floral designer, Nicolette Owen of nicolette camille uses a toran above her adorable kitchen sink. I love the bright color and how it makes everything else stand out. Her Brooklyn apartment was featured on Design*Sponge and it is simple and bright and filled with flowers, just as you would expect!
Wrap Anything in a Toran!
Tumblr users Monse & Ale Higareda also found these torans used to decorate a tree!
