Step Inside the Homes of our Designers for a Holiday Tour That’s Alive with Color
It’s officially Christmas, and we’re so happy to be home for the holidays! We invite you to step into our living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens for a quick holiday home tour. Hold on to your tassels and, with a festive cocktail in hand, come on inside…
Here’s how the Merry & Bright starts at Melanie’s house:
Merry Christmas from me and Mr. H!
I always decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. That’s an important tradition. So – what you call Black Friday, I call “Let the Festivities Begin!”
Christmas music starts at full blast at about 10 a.m. I put out donuts, muffins and coffee (with Bailey’s and Godiva liqueur). There’s usually a pot of turkey stock stewing on the stove.
It’s a big, happy, friends and family affair! Kids are singing, things get silly.
We put up the tree and hang stockings in the living room.
We wrap the banister with greenery and hang a wreath on the front door.
We also hang garlands on the front porch. Inside, the decor is generally a riff on blue and white, with little changes every year.
This year, the tree is hung with ginger jars, tassels, feathers and mercury glass. I love sticking long feathers and diamante stems in the branches.
Here’s a closer look at my mercury glass decorations on the antique buffet in the dining room.
Also, I absolutely love holiday table settings.
Last year we left for Scotland the day after Christmas, so it seemed like a perfect time to break out the tartan napkins and English Christmas Crackers. I loved mixing in classic Blue Willow dinnerware (borrowed from my sister).
The dining room felt a little tight for the dinner crowd last year, so we moved out all the living room furniture and set up our table there instead. It worked brilliantly!
I really like having everyone at one big table for a celebration. It feels more special.
This year, I’m also planning a Christmas Brunch, and I’ll be using SmithHönig’s Neela Blue fabric on my table for a classic global vibe.
Lastly, here’s a look at one of the special velvet “gift pillows” I bring out every year. This was a tradition started by my mother. She made them by hand and I think of her when I put them out.
Now let’s head over to Kellie’s house to see what she’s up to.
Here’s how Christmas prep goes down at Kellie’s House:
Kellie, here. Welcome and Merry Christmas! It’s my turn to walk you through Casa de Loco – aka my house (because you know things can get crazy up in here).
I like things colorful – including my Christmas decor. I also prefer a more modern take on holiday decorating. So for our main tree, this is what I usually do. A peacock look!
There is an almost life-sized peacock nestled in the branches.
Casa de Loco is a renovated mid-century home, but in the dining room, I do use some more traditional pieces. Dining rooms are all about traditions to me. I like an eclectic mix of vintage, antiques and just a dash of modern. I also like a dining room – as with every room – to have a touch of glamour.
I like to mix up the china patterns on my holiday table. As with home decor, I firmly believe that if you buy what you love, it will always work together. Don’t worry so much about specific patterns and color. Fall in love and mix it up.
The center of the table is filled with greenery, candles, feathers, ornaments, moss balls…everything I have leftover from the trees I put up throughout the house. It’s a little full but eating a little glitter never killed anyone, right? So what if it gets on a plate or two.
And how about this guy? This life-size Santa is quite old. He’s worn and tattered and absolutely perfect. I love those rosy red cheeks.
You may notice I have a thing for wit, sarcasm and irreverence, even during the holidays. Check out the monogrammed pillow, below, gifted to me by a friend. It’s plaid and sarcastic at the same time. What’s not to love?
Outside, in keeping with the mid-century feel of the Casa, I use square wreaths on the front doors. They are made of preserved boxwood. I love putting a twist on tradition when it comes to Christmas decor.
Last year, I added a new piece to the porch. I’ve yet to name her. I fancied her up with a gorgeous wreath and added berries, feathers, and of course, some glitter and bling.
That concludes the SmithHönig holiday home tour. Our homes may be different but you can see what unites us: a love of color, whimsy and life lived fully. It doesn’t matter if you live in a one-of-kind architectural gem or your house looks just like your neighbors, on the inside you can create your own version of holiday style with all the color and passion your heart contains. And we’ll be happy to put a tassel on it for you.
‘Tis the season of giving, so we would like to give a gift to you, our tribe!
