Melanie here 👋 Back to tell you a story about roots (literally). As a frequent traveler and fabric designer, I find inspiration everywhere. In winter, as friends and relatives begin to gather in family homes and relive cherished traditions, this story seems especially appropriate.

In 1858, my great-great-grandmother Katherina and her daughter Elizabeth left Europe a few days after Christmas. Among their belongings? Cuttings of delicate pink roses. She carefully crossed the ocean with them and nurtured them back to health. My mother and her mother kept the plants blooming and flourishing over the decades, and now I do as well. I’ve lived in many places, and wherever I roam, I bring my grandmother’s flowers with me.

It’s this feeling, and photographs of those very blooms (swipe to see), that inspired SmithHönig’s Ashes of Roses fabric. I designed Ashes of Roses as a tribute to the strong women in my family who braved storms and started new ventures and managed to protect what mattered. Happy Black Friday! It’s Kathy from @uptodateinteriors back to spend one more day with you and share a little more about our dining room. Our little single story 60’s ranch has an open concept living /dining room so this is our only eating space. When I participated in the @oneroomchallenge last Spring I was inspired by American silk textilist, Jim Thompson, who lived in Bangkok. While we were vacationing in Thailand I was able to visit his house and gardens. You can see a couple of his bird prints on our dining room wall. I wanted to get the most out of the small room but with lots of style so I used a glass table, banquet style seating, and global inspired fabric. My grandpa found the fabulous Romeo Rega table base at an estate sale and I found the glass top and MCM dining chairs on @facebookmarketplace. I wanted a pop of pink in this space to lighten the rest of the living areas with deep blues and greens. SmithHönig’s Thread Bare Fabric had the perfect colors and pattern for them and looks great with all of the other prints in the room. It works so well for everyday use but also makes a stunning feature when the room is decorated for the holidays. I’ve always loved using non-traditional colors for seasonal and holiday decor and this fabric is so easy to decorate around.
